How to Care for a Soaptree Yucca

The soaptree yucca (Yucca elata) grows between 6 and 20 feet tall, with a spread of approximately 6 to 10 feet. It is notable for its interesting leafy trunk and its tall flower stalks, which grow an additional 4 to 6 feet from the top green portion of the plant. White bell-shaped flowers hang along these tall flower spikes in the spring and early summer. The soaptree yucca requires little maintenance to thrive and should be an easy-to-grow plant in the garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Prune the soaptree yucca flower stalks down to the base of the plant after they have finished blooming. The soaptree yucca produces only one new flowering from each clump or branch.

    • 2

Water a soaptree yucca regularly the first year after planting. Water with 1 inch of water about once a week when the soil feels dry. In subsequent years, water a soaptree yucca with 1 inch of water approximately once or twice a month during the summer.

    • 3

Avoid treating your plant for pronuba moths, also known as yucca moths. The soaptree yucca, as with all yuccas, needs this moth to reproduce and flower.

    • 4

Leave the dead foliage for which this plant is known. The dead leaves will form an attractive and protective cover on the soaptree yucca's trunk.
