How to Store Half a Watermelon

Whole watermelons keep for several weeks on the counter at room temperature, however after cutting a watermelon in half, it's vital that you store the fruit right away to ensure freshness. You can still keep cut watermelon in a cooler with ice for a few hours if you can't refrigerate soon after cutting. Taking extra steps to properly store watermelon keeps bugs away and prevents the food from rotting too soon, while also preserving its nutritional value.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the watermelon in half and set it on the counter.

    • 2

Rinse the cut watermelon in the sink under cold running water. Clean off the top and sides of the melon.

    • 3

Dry off the sides of the outer shell of the watermelon with a paper towel.

    • 4

Wrap plastic wrap around the exposed flesh of the watermelon and place it in the fridge. A half watermelon is too large for most plastic containers. However, you can cut the watermelon into smaller pieces and put these pieces in a container also. Keep watermelon in the refrigerator if you plan on eating it within one week.
