Start new sugar cane plants by planting stem cuttings taken from an existing sugar cane plant. Canes have small protrusions call nodes. When planted in soil, a node grows into a new stalk. To plant a cutting, dig a trench about 7 inches deep, and plant a section sideways in the soil. Sugar cane requires rich soil and a lot of sunshine and moisture.
