How to Ripen Winter Pears

Harvest pears from the tree before they ripen. When pears ripen on the tree, they have a gritty texture and the fruits begin to deteriorate. Keep pears cool so they ripen properly. Winter pears require a longer cooling period to ensure that they ripen without decomposing. Monitor the pears carefully after you harvest them to enjoy the fruits when they reach the peak of ripeness. Oregon State University states that there is a small window between when pears are too hard and too soft.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the pears when they reach a mature size on the tree. Squeeze the pears gently by wrapping your hand around them. The pears will give slightly and will not feel rock hard.

    • 2

Inspect the color of the pears. Harvest the pears while they still appear green.

    • 3

Lift the pears slightly. Twist the winter pears gently to release them from the tree.

    • 4

Store the winter pears in the refrigerator at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter pears require 30 days of refrigeration for them to ripen properly.

    • 5

Remove the pears and place them out at room temperature to finish ripening. The pears will ripen completely within two to three days.

    • 6

Place a pear in the palm of your hand. Press your thumb on the flesh where the stem meets the pear and press gently. A pear is ripe when it yields to the pressure; it needs to continue to ripen if you have to push hard for the fruit to give.
