How to Grow Pink Muhly

Muhlenbergia capillaris, commonly called pink muhly grass, produces cloud-like sprays of pink flowers in the fall. Since they grow easily, and self-sow, masses of them commonly grow in undeveloped areas and along roadsides. In the garden, when everything else is beginning to wane, these grasses burst forth with eye-catching color. Pink muhly grass almost thrives on neglect. It's perfect for infertile soils in sunny garden spots where nothing else will grow.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a spot in full sun or with morning shade and full afternoon sun. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the container. No soil amendment is necessary because muhly grass is tolerant of all types of soil. Space the plants 24 to 36 inches apart. Place the plant in the hole, and fill. Poke several holes around the plant to prevent air pockets and tamp down the soil well.

    • 2

Spread mulch around the plant at least 2 to 3 inches deep. Water your pink muhly grass twice a week until it is established. Water at least once a week on every week that there is not an inch of rain.

    • 3

Fertilize pink muhly grass monthly during the growing season with an all-purpose granular fertilizer. Do not use a lawn fertilizer on muhly grass because it may keep it from blooming.

Cut the dead grass back to 4 to 6 inches tall in February. Start fertilizing in March.
