How to Plant a Creeping Fig to Cover a Building

Creeping fig is a hardy climbing plant that will grow up the sides of buildings without the assistance of strings or a trellis. This plant can grow its own tiny stickers that cement it to a surface and allow it to climb. It's a beautiful plant that can offer an alternative to ugly walls with little expense and effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant a creeping fig vine next to the building that you want to cover in a location that gets full sun or partial shade and features well-drained soil.

    • 2

Water the creeping fig vine well, immediately after planting, to help it overcome the shock of being transplanted.

    • 3

Train the vines onto the building by tying a string above the plant and wrapping the vines around it. Creeping fig will take to the wall without strings, but having one at the start will give it a boost.

    • 4

Plant creeping figs at various points around the building to cover it with vines and leaves more quickly. You can plant some on the north side of the building, but they will probably not grow as enthusiastically because of the lack of sun.

Keep your vines well watered in periods of low rainfall. If you are in doubt, put a finger in the soil next to the vine. If the soil feels dry rather than damp a few inches down, water the plant.
