The Removal of Schefflera

Scheffleras are tropical plants often grown as houseplants, which are easy enough to remove simply by discarding them. However, if your schefflera is growing outdoors in the ground, as it does in Florida and other year-round warm climates, removal is a bit more labor intensive. It is not impossible to get rid of a schefflera permanently, but it will require you to keep an eye on the area where it grew to make sure none is allowed to grow back, or your schefflera will eventually come back with full vigor. The variety called Schefflera actinophylla is invasive and may be on your state's invasive species list.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut down the schefflera to the ground using pruning shears, a saw or lopping shears.

    • 2

Dig out the schefflera roots as much as you can with a spade or shovel. Discard the roots in plastic bags.

    • 3

Spray the green growth with glyphosate whenever the schefflera regrows, as it likely will. If the schefflera is growing near wanted plants, paint on the glyphosate instead. Read and follow the glyphosate's label instructions for proper usage.

    • 4

Cut down the green growth as an alternative to the applying glyphosate. Whenever the schefflera grows, simply cut it back. You will eventually starve it to death.
