How to Replant a Pumpkin

The pumpkin is most commonly associated with the Halloween holiday because they are often cut open to make jack-o-lanterns and are also used throughout the fall to make pumpkin pie. While many people go out and buy new pumpkins every year, you can grow your own by replanting the seeds from a pumpkin you already have. Replanting a pumpkin requires patience and diligence to keep the plant healthy enough to create new pumpkins.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a place in your yard that is open enough to give the pumpkin plant plenty of room to grow. It should also get at least six hours of sunlight per day, because pumpkins thrive in sunny spots.

    • 2

Use a shovel to create a mound of dirt about 3 feet in diameter in that spot. Dig a 4-inch by 4-inch trench around the mound to help retain moisture for the pumpkin's root system.

    • 3

Drop the pumpkin seeds from your old pumpkin into a glass of water the night before planting to soften the shell. Soak them for several hours.

    • 4

Plant five pumpkin seeds into the center of the mound about 6 inches apart from each other in the late spring or early summer. The rainy season should be mostly over and the temperature ideally should be around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Position the seeds so the narrow side is facing up and cover them with about an inch of dirt.

    • 5

Water the mound daily with a watering can to keep the dirt moist. You should start seeing sprouts start to break through the dirt within a week or two.

    • 6

Remove extraneous sprouts from the dirt after two weeks so only two or three of the strongest ones remain in the mound.

    • 7

Add a thin layer of compost or manure to the mound as the pumpkin vines start to grow. This provides additional nutrients.

    • 8

Trim or groom the plant as needed to keep it growing where you want it to and to prevent it from spreading into unwanted areas.

    • 9

Pick new pumpkins off the vine once they turn yellow or orange.
