How to Landscape With Yucca

Yucca plants are drought-loving trees or shrubs that thrive in desert conditions. They have pointy foliage and produce clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers. You can use yuccas as ornamental plants in any landscape that is not too moist or dark. They fit best with a rock garden or desert-scape. Their sharp foliage means the plants may not be appropriate for areas where your children or pets frequently play.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting spot that has enough room for the variety of yucca you are planting. Plant larger shrubs or tree varieties alone because they can quickly reach up to 9 feet tall. You can group low yuccas.

    • 2

Select a site that is in full sun to partial shade, has well-draining, dry soil and is warm. Yuccas will not survive in a climate or environment that is cold, wet or dark.

    • 3

Place the potted yuccas in the spot where you want to plant them to make sure they go well with the landscape. Put the yuccas behind any other plants in the planting site, and away from walkways. The leaves are very sharp and can cut a passerby. Plant the yucca near plants that need the same amount of water and light because yuccas thrive on drought conditions that may kill nearby plants.

    • 4

Dig a hole twice as wide as the planting pot, and just as deep. Remove the yucca from its container and lower it into the hole. Fill the hole with soil and water until the soil settles.

    • 5

Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Yuccas are desert-hardy and thrive in drought conditions.

    • 6

Use sharp pruning shears to cut back the flower stalks after they bloom. This keeps the plant looking tidy.
