How to Remove a Luffa Shell

Unlike other gourds that have unique outer shells, the luffa gourd's shell is insignificant. What the luffa gourd does have going for it is its fibrous interior, which can be used to exfoliate dead skin cells and stimulate circulation when rubbed against the skin while taking a bath or shower. If you have luffa growing in your yard, removing the outer shell immediately after harvest will yield a cylindrical, natural-fiber sponge that is ready to use after it dries.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the luffa gourd to separate it from the vine. If twisting doesn't work, cut the luffa gourd's stem from the vine with a sharp pair of scissors.

    • 2

Hold the luffa gourd upright -- stem facing up. Bang the bottom of the luffa gourd briskly, several times against a hard surface.

    • 3

Continue banging until the outer shell cracks, releasing a bounty of seeds. Examine the bottom of the luffa gourd to identify the location of the cracked shell.

    • 4

Slip your thumb under the broken shell of the luffa gourd and lift. Pull the shell away from the inner fiber using your thumb and pointer finger.

    • 5

Peel in an upward motion from bottom to top. Continue peeling until only the inner fibers of the luffa gourd are visible. Discard the shell and soak the luffa in soapy water to remove any sap left behind by the outer shell. Rinse the luffa in warm water and air dry in the sun.
