One of the main advantages of Pioneer 25R78 wheat is that it often yields a plentiful harvest. Trials conducted in the state of Tennessee during 2003 through 2005 indicated that Pioneer 25R78 produced an average yield of about 67 bushels per acre, according to the Delta Farm Press. While it did not generate the highest yield among all contenders, it outperformed 126 of 140 varieties.
The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture indicates that Pioneer 25R78 users achieved third and fourth place in the 2008 Wheat Contest, among farmers using tillage. With yields of over 110 bushels per acre, they outperformed 13 other rivals.
Susceptibility to certain plant diseases has reduced the popularity of Pioneer 25R78 wheat to an extent, yet it maintains some advantages in this area. Although prone to stripe rust, the 25R78 variety resists leaf rust rather well, according to the Southwest Farm Press. Using fungicide helps curtail the effects of stripe rust. The patent data for the Pioneer 25R78 indicates that it also prevents powdery mildew and leaf blight fairly effectively. It resists lodging very well, according to Triple D Seed.
The Pioneer 25R78 wheat variety provides various other advantages which prove more useful to some farmers than others. Triple D Seed indicates that it offers a desirable test weight and grows to a short to medium height. The patent information states that 25R78 proves well-suited to milling and matures quickly. It reliably survives winter conditions as well. This remains more important in the north but can offer advantages in the south where unexpectedly wintry weather surfaces on occasion.
Pioneer 25R78 offers one option among many dozens of different wheat varieties. Its advantages with regard to leaf rust, winter hardiness, milling, lodging and yield make it a desirable choice in many areas. However, it remains less appealing in regions prone to stripe rust, its greatest weakness. Farmers who experience significant problems with powdery mildew or leaf blight may also want to look for a more resistant variety than Pioneer 25R78.
