Ammonium Sulfate Fertilizer Precautions

Ammonium sulfate is made from sulfur and ammonia and comes in small, white granules. The product has a pure nitrogen composition, with no potassium or phosphorus. It's water soluble and lowers the soil pH of alkaline soils. Use ammonium sulfate in vegetable gardens or on trees, shrubs and perennials when you need a high-nitrogen fertilizer. Ammonium sulfate costs a bit more than other nitrogen sources and is not recommended for acidic soils.
  1. Health

    • Ammonium sulfate is not considered carcinogenic, and is sometimes used as a food additive. However, when ingested in small amounts, it may cause mild discomfort; in large amounts, it may cause diarrhea. Drink two glasses of water and induce vomiting if large amounts are ingested. Prolonged skin or eye exposure may cause mild irritation. Wash skin with mild soap and water, and flush eyes if exposed.

    Gardening

    • In the garden, ammonium sulfate quickly lowers the soil pH, making it more acidic. In soils with a pH level above 7.0, this action may be beneficial, but ammonium sulfate may make soils with a low pH too acidic. Use another form of nitrogen if your soil pH is below 7.0. Overfertilizing with any form of nitrogen can contribute to excessive leafy growth and reduced fruiting. When applied after midsummer to shrubs, perennials and trees, nitrogen fertilizers may promote winter injury. Apply only the recommended amount of fertilizer and make fertilizer applications in early to midspring. Vegetable gardens are an exception to this rule, and may need later fertilizing.

    Water

    • Like all nitrogen fertilizers, ammonium sulfate encourages algae growth in streams and waterways. Excess algae growth clogs waterways and may harm other marine life. Take extra care when using ammonium sulfate near any water source and clean tools with a hose, rather than in a stream. Apply only the recommended amount of fertilizer on a dry, clear day to avoid runoff.

    Fire Hazard

    • Ammonium sulfate is not combustible and is used in fire extinguishing materials. However, when mixed with oxidizers, such as hydrogen peroxide, it may cause the oxidizer to become unstable. Always read package directions carefully before mixing ammonium sulfate with any other product, and be sure to store it safely so it won't come into contact with other materials.
