How to Separate Hulled Birdseed

Several types of seeds usually are mixed together as birdseed, providing a variety of nutrients for pets or wild birds. However, many seeds are either packaged with their hulls on -- which detach during shipping -- or are dehulled yet the hulls are included. You can separate the chaff from the good seeds by hand easily, to provide a better quality of bird food.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the birdseed into the bowl, scattering it in an even layer.

    • 2

Press lightly on the seeds, if the hulls are not slightly loosened already. This should crack them slightly.

    • 3

Turn on the hairdryer, and gently blow the chaff off the seeds.

    • 4

Continue blowing while shaking the bowl gently, to move around the chaff.

    • 5

Pick out any remaining hulls with your fingers, and discard them.
