Autumn Planting Species

Although days get shorter and temperatures cool, the arrival of autumn does not mean that you have to put away the gardening tools. For some plant species, it is a perfect time for planting to ensure a vibrant spring garden or to add color and interest to fall landscaping.
  1. Bulbs

    • Planting bulbs in the fall will enliven a spring garden with early, colorful blossoms. Daffodil, crocus, allium and tulip bulbs are all species that are suited for fall planting. Be aware of your plant hardiness zone before purchasing autumn bulbs, as some may not be appropriate for your climate.

    Seeds

    • Seeds of many plants require the dormant winter before becoming successful. Fruit and oak trees drop their seeds in fall to ensure growth in the spring. Autumn is a perfect time to plant grass seeds. The roots will grow underground and deliver a healthy lawn in the spring.

    Plants

    • Autumn is ideal for planting trees and shrubs, as there are less extremes of temperature. Most tree species require fall conditions for planting. Shrubs of rose, hydrangea and spiraea species are all suitable for fall planting.
