How to Grow Liverwort

Liverwort is also known as Hepatica or liverleaf. It is a shade-loving perennial that reaches heights of 2 to 8 inches, making it an appropriate groundcover in rock or shade gardens. It produces dark green, lobed foliage that retains its color through winter. The flowers are tiny and come in a variety of colors. Liverwort is a low-maintenance plant that will thrive in moist, shaded soil where other plants would fail.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting site that has moist, humus-rich soil and partial to full shade. Loosen the soil with a garden tiller to a depth of 8 inches in the early summer.

    • 2

Place the liverwort seeds on the bare soil, spacing them 6 to 12 inches apart. Rake a 1/4-inch layer of soil over the seeds. Water until the soil settles.

    • 3

Water the liverworts during droughts, or whenever the soil feels moist to the touch. Apply a 1-inch layer of shredded leaf mulch around the base of the plant in the fall to protect the roots from winter weather.
