How to Make Your Own Growing Pots

Making your own garden pots saves money while reusing materials that otherwise may have wound up in the trash. Newspaper pots cost nothing to make and have the added benefit of decomposing in the soil so you can plant your seedling straight into the garden. Make newspaper pots using black and white newspaper. Fill the pot with soil and plant the desired seeds. Keep the seeds moist while they germinate and then transfer them to their permanent location.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one sheet of newspaper on a hard surface. Tear the newspaper down the center seam so you have two sheets of paper. Set one page aside.

    • 2

Fold the torn piece of paper in half to form a long, skinny rectangle. Lay the rectangle on the table in front of you so it points away from your body.

    • 3

Set a glass on its side so it lays covering the short edge of the paper on one end. The glass should cover half the of the newspaper's width and the remaining half sticks out.

    • 4

Roll the newspaper around the glass to form a tight tube.

    • 5

Push the edges of the newspaper into the glass.

    • 6

Remove the glass and set the newspaper tube on the table with the squashed edges down. Stick your fingers into the tube and press the squashed edges down so they cover the bottom of the tube.

    • 7

Reinsert the glass with the bottom down to help form the bottom of the pot. Remove the glass.
