How to Mulch With Onion Peels

Onion peels usually end up in the trash, but they will serve you a lot better if you put them in garden and use them as a mulch ingredient. Mulches keep soil moist, provide plants with nutrients, and prevent weeds from growing in your vegetable and flower beds. Mulches also keep the ground warm, protecting plants during winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect kitchen waste in a bowl or basket. Onion peels, eggshells, stale bread, leftover greens and similar organic materials may all be gathered and turned into mulch. Do not include meats, bones and fatty foods.

    • 2

Gather yard and garden waste such as grass clippings, straw, wood shavings and corn husks.

    • 3

Mix the food waste and yard waste to create a nutrient-rich mulch for the garden.

    • 4

Look through the collection and trim any pieces of bark or waste that are large and thick; these items will not break down easily into the soil. Cut any big pieces into smaller pieces.

    • 5

Spread the mulch around garden beds approximately 4 inches thick. Do not place mulch directly against the base of stems and trunks; start the mulch 2 to 3 inches away.
