How to Build Balcony Garden Irrigation

Apartment, townhouse and condominium dwellers may lack a yard for gardening. You can create your own container garden on a balcony using regular plant pots, 5-gallon buckets and even spare tires. Watering a balcony garden is messy, especially if you are using a regular garden hose. Building a drip irrigation system can be expensive, but you can create a simple system for balcony garden irrigation using used glass bottles. By converting the bottles into self-watering mechanisms, you will create an inexpensive and low-maintenance irrigation system.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash out your used glass bottles with clean water. You need one bottle for every container on the balcony.

    • 2

Use an electric drill to drill a hole in the center of each bottle cap. Insert the bottom of an auto-water nozzle into each hole.

    • 3

Fill the bottles with water. Screw the caps onto the bottles. Turn the bottles upside down and insert one into the soil of each container on your balcony. As the soil releases oxygen into the bottles, water is forced through the nozzle and into the soil.

Refill the bottles when they are 1/4 full. The frequency will depend on your climate and how frequently the soil becomes dry.
