How to Make a Staghorn Fern Hanger

Hanging the staghorn fern from a mounting board is simple and direct way to propagate this interesting plant. This method requires little or no gardening expertise or experience with tools. The mounting and hanging of the fern takes approximately two hours and the plant requires very little attention from that point forward. Hang the mounted fern out of direct sunlight under the branches of a large tree. Make certain there is plenty of room for the fern to spread out as it grows.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a piece of wood to hang the fern that is 2 to 3 inches thick, at least 1 foot wide and approximately 2 feet long.

    • 2

Treat the wood to prevent it from rotting by painting or staining it. Allow the wood to dry before mounting the fern.

    • 3

Place a mounded cup of peat moss, mature compost or other organic material in the center of the hanger board approximately 2 inches below the middle. Pack it lightly into a rounded, circular mound.

    • 4

Place the fern on the hanger board directly above the organic material and make certain the basal fronds are touching the board.

    • 5

Secure the organic material and the fern to the board. Wrap the wire or nylon cord, spaced approximately an inch apart, tightly along the length of the organic material and the fern.

    • 6

Hang the board to a tree by wrapping several strands of wire or cord around it and the tree.
