DIY: Plant Chamber

Keep your plants safe from pests, cold weather and frost with a plant chamber. A plant chamber will keep cold air and wind off of your plants and will trap in heat from the Earth and the Sun. You can build a simple plant chamber using pine boards and plexiglass. A moderate-sized chamber with 22 cubic feet of space will be large enough to house one to four tomato plants, depending on their size.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 30-inch boards parallel and 26 inches apart, and then place two 26-inch boards between them at right angles and spaced 26 inches apart. Screw through the 30-inch boards and into the ends of the 26-inch boards so you have a 30-by-30-inch frame. Use four 4-inch screws. This is the top frame to your plant chamber. Repeat this step to build the bottom frame.

    • 2

Lay two 60-inch boards parallel and 26 inches apart. Lay a 60-inch sheet of plexiglass on top of the boards so the edges are flush with the sides and ends of the boards. Screw the plexiglass to the boards by pre-drilling 1/4-inch holes and placing a washer on each 1 3/4-inch screw to hold down the plexiglass. This is one side to your plant chamber. Repeat this step to build the opposite sides. Pre-drill 1/4-inch holes and use washers when securing any plexiglass in this project.

    • 3

Position the two sides upright and parallel so the boards are between the plexiglass. Space the sides 26 inches, apart and position the last two plexiglass sheets against the sides at a right angle so the edges are flush. Screw the plexiglass sheets to the boards, following the same fastening process you did in the last step. This is your plant chamber frame.

Set your plant chamber frame on its side and position the top and bottom frames against the open ends of the chamber frame so the edges are flush. Screw four 4-inch screws through each frame and into the ends of the 60-inch boards. Position the 30-by-30-inch plexiglass sheet against the top frame, and then screw it down using four 1 3/4-inch screws for each board on the frame. This is your completed plant chamber. Lift the chamber over your plant to protect it from frost and other cold weather.
