How to Kill Watercress

Watercress is a short water plant which grows up to 2 feet. It has white flowers and deep green pinnate leaves. Watercress often flourishes in ponds and lakes between the warm months of May and October in America and Europe. However, it can be an unwelcome sight for many, as it spreads very rapidly, and is notoriously extremely difficult to kill.

Instructions

Act quickly. As watercress grows so quickly, the sooner you get rid of it, the better. Left alone, watercress will become overgrown, and it will be time-consuming and difficult to remove it all. Use a pitchfork or garden tool to take it out of the pond. Once you have removed the majority of the watercress, keeping it under control is all the more easier. However, you will need to keep a regular check on the watercress levels, and be prepared to harvest it every few weeks during the summer months.

Introduce animals to your pond, who will eat the watercress. Snails, ducks and goldfish all enjoy eating watercress, and they will naturally keep the watercress levels in your pond to a minimum.

Harvest the watercress yourself, and either eat it yourself, or pass it to others to enjoy. Watercress is safe to eat for humans. You can eat it either raw or cooked, and can be used in a variety of recipes. Before eating it, make sure the watercress is thoroughly cleaned with fresh water. Watercress is a nutritious and healthy food, containing high levels of iron and vitamin and very few calories.
