How to Fertilize a Pasture Organically

Organic farming and gardening have risen in popularity in recent years. Free of pesticides and other potentially harsh chemicals and toxins, organic gardening and farming employ the use of all-natural fertilizers and repellents to grow food and plants. Many organic fertilizers can be made at home or can be easily bought at local and national retailers.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy organic fertilizer. Many specialty stores and national retailers sell bags of fertilizer that is organic and all-natural. Spread the fertilizer around the pasture using the manner and amount directed on the fertilizer bag.

    • 2

Fertilize the pasture using animal droppings. Horse manure, cow manure, rabbit manure, chicken droppings and bat guano all contain nutrients that will aid grass, flowers and plants to grow. Collect the droppings from such animals if you own any or buy bagged manure or droppings from a local retailer.

    • 3

Collect things from your own body to use as fertilizer, such as hair and urine. Save your own hair when cut or ask a local salon or beauty shop to save and bag up hair that they cut. Collect your urine in a jug or container and add it to a compost pile or directly to the pasture. Human hair contains nitrogen, which aids plants in growing, while human urine can be used as an organic weed killer.

    • 4

Buy fish emulsion to promote the growth of plants, including fruits and vegetables. Dilute the fish emulsion using water according to the directions on the package and add it to the soil surrounding each plant in your garden or pasture.

    • 5

Burn untreated wood in a fireplace or campfire and save the ashes. Work the ashes into the ground of your pasture to act as a natural fertilizer.

    • 6

Start a compost pile in your backyard or buy a compost bin. Add organic materials to the bin to create all-natural compost, such as the peelings and cores of organic fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds and egg shells. Mix the compost in with the soil of your pasture so that all of the compost nutrients can be evenly spread around.
