Germinating Welwitschia Mirabilis

Welwitschia miraibilis is a native plant from the Namib Desert in Africa discovered by Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch. The Welwitschia miraibilis can grow to a height of 3 1/2 feet with a spread of about 13 feet. The adult Welwitschia miraibilis has two leaves, a stem base and roots. These two leaves continue to grow longer throughout the plant’s life. These plants can grow for years. Their average life span is 400 to 1,500 years.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a clear plastic coffee cup container with the well-drained seed sowing soil or a mixture that is one part horticultural sand, one part perlite and two parts standard compost. Make sure that the container has drainage holes at the bottom.

    • 2

Water the soil so it is moist.

    • 3

Place a seed on top of the soil’s surface. Push it down slightly. You don’t want it covered by the soil, you just want one side of the seed to be in contact with the soil.

    • 4

Place the pot in a bright location. The seed needs light to germinate. The area should remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 5

Feel the soil for moisture. Water to keep the soil moist but not soggy or the seeds may rot. It takes 30 to 90 days for the seeds to germinate.
