How to Grow Viguiera Goldeneye From Seeds

The Viguiera goldeneye flower attracts bees, butterflies, and birds to your garden. This plant is drought resistant and hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 4 through 10. The yellow flowers appear in midsummer and continue to bloom through mid fall. Sow the seeds when the soil is 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the fall or early spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the weeds or other vegetation where you want to plant Viguiera goldeneye. It should be in an area that receives full or partial sun.

    • 2

Till or dig the ground with a garden fork to a depth of 8 inches. You don’t need to amend the soil with compost; Viguiera goldeneye is a wildflower and will grow in almost any soil.

    • 3

Level the soil with the back of your rake. Remove any sticks, rocks or hard clods that you find.

    • 4

Allow the soil to settle for a week. This keeps the seeds from falling too deeply into the soil, where they won’t grow.

    • 5

Scatter the seeds over the ground. Try to keep seed distribution even.

    • 6

Compress the seed into the soil with a lawn roller. If you don’t have a lawn roller, place a board over the soil and press down. Carefully pick up the board, and move it until you have compressed the entire area.

    • 7

Water the soil gently with a sprayer. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Seeds germinate in about three weeks.

    • 8

Thin the plants to allow 18 to 24 inches between them, if you want a more formal look. Do this when the plants are 3 inches tall. Thinned plants can be moved to another section of your garden.

    • 9

Water to keep the ground moist until the plants are established. You should also water if there is a severe drought in your area.

    • 10

Deadhead the flowers through the season, or leave them and they will go to seed. The plants will self-seed and fill in open areas.
