How to Lower a pH

Strictly speaking, pH is the measure of acidity or alkalinity in an aqueous solution; any substance with moisture in it has pH. In gardening and other forms of agriculture, this can affect the types of plants that can thrive in the soil. In order to encourage a desired type of plant to grow, chemicals can be added to the soil to adulterate it and alter the pH. To lower pH, you can use either aluminum sulfate or powder sulfur.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your soil bed for pH, as an accurate reading is necessary in determining how far the pH needs to be lowered. Most garden centers sell home pH kits, but some dedicated gardeners actually send their soil to laboratories to accurately test their pH.

    • 2

Purchase and weigh aluminum sulfate from the hardware store or garden center, consulting the array on the package. The amount of sulfate added to the soil is dependent on the current pH and the desired pH.

Dig up the plot and sprinkle the aluminum sulfate on the bottom of the dug-up ditch. Add the soil one layer at a time, sprinkling sulfate while adding to each layer. While adding the soil and the sulfate, till the soil to fully integrate the sulfate with the soil.
