How to Turn Logs Into Planters

Lovers of a rustic style often enjoy furniture and fixtures constructed from natural, unmilled logs. Craftsmen use logs to create chairs, tables, bed frames and benches. Extend your love of whole timbers to your gardening by forgoing pre-manufactured flowerpots for homemade log planters. Instructions

    • 1

Find a round log with flat ends and a height of at least 12 inches and a diameter of at least 10 inches. Inspect the log to ensure that no signs of rot or splitting exist. If the log is still wet, leave it in the sun for several days until it dries.

    • 2

Place the log upright on a solid work surface. Set a smaller plastic pot, with at least a 2-inch smaller diameter and height than the log, on the top of the log. Place the pot in the center of the log and trace around its base to create a circle on the top end of the log.

    • 3

Drill successive holes along the circle, using a Forstner bit. Add a Forstner bit extension to the drill to enable a hole depth equal to the height of the plastic pot.

    • 4

Align the blade of a chisel between the drilled holes and hammer out the wood between the holes.

    • 5

Create another circle of successive holes just inside the first hollowed circle. Chisel the wood between the holes. Continue drilling and chiseling in concentric circles until the inside of the log is entirely cored.

    • 6

Drill three to five drainage holes through the bottom end of the log.

    • 7

Sweep the log with a hand broom to remove all wood shavings and dust.

    • 8

Paint the log with two coats of non-toxic wood sealer to protect it from water damage.

    • 9

Plant the desired plants into the plastic pot then slip the plastic pot into the cored cavity in the log.
