How to Make Seed Strips With Toilet Paper

Seed strips are lengths of biodegradable material to which seeds are attached at measured distances. You can plant seed strips directly into the garden and not have to worry about dropping seeds in the right place or measuring distances between planting holes. You can make your own seed strips at home from singly-ply, unscented, white toilet paper. Once the strips are made, plant them directly in the garden, or save them in a cool, dry area until planting time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your garden bed, or the length of the row in which you will plant the seed strip. Tear off the same length of toilet paper, and lay it flat on a table.

    • 2

Read the back of your seed packet to see how far apart the seeds need to be planted. Make pencil marks on the toilet paper that are that distance apart, starting at one end of the strip and going all the way to the end.

    • 3

Mix 1 tablespoon of flour and 1 tablespoon of water in a bowl. Stir until it forms a thin paste.

    • 4

Put a dab of the flour onto the pencil marks with a paintbrush. Press one or two seeds into the flour water on the toilet paper after you paint each mark. Continue all the way down the length of the toilet paper.

    • 5

Fold the strip in half over the seeds. Plant the strip in the ground, or save it until you are ready to plant.
