Prepare the planting site in early spring or fall by removing the weeds and loosening the soil with a shovel. Rake the soil so it is even. The site should get full sun and have moist, well-draining soil with a pH of between 6.0 and 7.0.
Scatter the seed over the prepared soil at a rate of 10 to 20 pounds per acre. Cover the seed with 1/2-inch layer of soil and water until the soil settles. Continue watering frequently enough to keep the soil moist, in the absence of sufficient rain.
Apply a nitrogen fertilizer to the soil at a rate of 50 pounds per acre, according to the package directions. Make the application once the grass greens. Apply another 50 pounds after you cut the grass down for harvest.
Do not cut the grass or allow any animals to graze it until it reaches at least 10 inches high in the second season of growth. Never cut the grass to shorter than 4 inches.
