How to Make an Ivy Grow in Shapes

The easiest way to train ivy into different shapes or patterns is to use an espalier. The term “espalier” refers to the practice of training various plants to grow vertically into different patterns or shapes. Climbing vines, such as ivy, are excellent candidates for both formal and informal espalier designs. Planting ivy at the base of an espalier framework and securing it to the frame as it grows upward can create a wide variety of shapes and patterns.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a shape for the espalier. Common patterns include diamonds, squares, palmettes, u-shapes, arctures or horizontal tiered cordons. Although espalier frameworks can be constructed in almost any shape, most gardeners will find it easier to purchase a pre-made espalier frame from a nursery or home and garden center.

    • 2

Locate the frame of the espalier at least 6 inches away from walls or other vertical surfaces, to allow for sufficient airflow.

    • 3

Plant ivy in a container or directly in soil at the base of the espalier frame.

    • 4

Dig a hole one foot wider and slightly deeper than the plants root ball. Backfill with enough soil to set the rootball level with the surrounding soil. Fill in and water thoroughly, and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to conserve water and deter weed growth.

    • 5

Bend vines into place gently, and secure with plant ties.

    • 6

Cut away any undesired branches, shoots and growing tips.

    • 7

Tie growing shoots to the frame at regular intervals to conform to the pattern as the ivy grows, using flexible plant ties. Direct the growing tips in the desired direction to conform to the overall shape or pattern.

    • 8

Remove any shoots growing outward at right angles from the vertical plane of the espalier frame, as well as any that detract from the espalier’s form.

    • 9

Fertilize heavily to encourage rapid growth after planting. Use a 12-4-8 or 16-4-8 blend, at a rate of one pound per 100 square feet of growing area.

    • 10

Reduce fertilization levels to one application per growing season once the ivy becomes established, and the espalier pattern begins to take shape.

    • 11

Use pruning shears to remove the growing tips of the vine, once it has reached its desired length. Regular pruning promotes fuller, bushier growth.
