How to Care for a Magnolia Grandiflora in Winter

The Magnolia grandiflora is not a tree that works well in regions with severe winters. For this reason, it is found primarily in the South, according to the University of Florida. Even mild winters can have an effect on the growth pattern and life of this evergreen tree, but with proper care during cold weather, the Magnolia grandiflora will produce dense foliage with large, fragrant blossoms when the warm air comes back around in the spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Prune the tree to remove any dead branches and to thin out the brush before winter hits.

    • 2

Cover the ground around the tree with wood chips. Keep the chips pulled back from the trunk of the tree. The goal is to blanket the ground around the tree without allowing contact. If the wood chips sit up against the tree, they may cause disease and infestation.

    • 3

Wrap the exposed trunk of the tree with cardboard, then cover the cardboard with a plastic wrap to make it waterproof.

    • 4

Set up a tepee-style frame around the tree. Make the frame large enough that it does not come into contact with the plant. Use wood or wire for the structure. Drape fabric over the frame to serve as a barrier against the wind.
