How to Trim a Juniper

The evergreen juniper shrub looks beautiful all year and often acts as an anchor for the rest of your landscaping. Junipers grow quickly in wet areas but tolerate all but the most severe drought. One of their primary uses as foundation plantings is to wick water away from the foundation of your home. Because of their straight root growing habit, they are rarely a problem for the foundation itself. Trimming junipers is normally a once a year project. It can be done in either the spring or the fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Step back and decide how much to trim. This is important because it is not unusual for first time juniper trimmers to trim more than they want. You can always trim a bit more later. Don't trim more than 25 percent of the bush at a time.

    • 2

Use hedge trimmers on newer growth and loppers on older, tougher growth. If you are trimming the junipers back and removing new growth, simply trim off the light green shoots. Make cuts with the lopper at a 45-degree angle and make the cuts as clean and neat as possible.

    • 3

Don't cut beyond the last green growth on a limb. Beyond this point the limb may not recover.
