Grape Gardens & How to Get Large Grapes

Grapes are berries grown in clusters at the ends of vines, which are usually grown commercially on trellises. A trellis is a fence-like structure on which vines creep along, growing horizontally and vertically. Grapes are comprised of a handful of varieties, usually grown for eating, making jam, wine and vinegar. To encourage bigger grapes, you must tend to the grapevine carefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the soil tested to make sure it has a pH of between 6.0 to 7.2. More basic or acidic soils have a tough time supporting grapes in the root stage before they start sprouting vines. Grape seeds should be planted about eight to 10 feet apart to encourage deep roots. The trellis for the vines should provide a good guideline for how far apart to plant seeds.

    • 2

Train the vines to the trellis so that they have room to spread over the structure. Do this by physically moving the vine over to the trellis structure, ensuring enough space for each vine. Vines should be encouraged to catch sun on all sides, from the leaves to the fruit, and watered until the ground is moist.

    • 3

Prune the stems of the vines regularly. Each vine should only one stem, and buds should be evenly spaced. This is the factor that most affects grape size, along with water intake. Because grapes are more than 90 percent water, the best course of action is to keep as few fruits growing as possible.
