How to Cut a Bamboo Stalk

Approximately 1,000 species of bamboo exist around the world. Many are native to tropical areas, although some thrive in temperate climates. Bamboo, a versatile plant that makes a strong, sustainable building material, is common in many tropical Third World countries. One feature of bamboo is spreading by underground runners. To keep your bamboo confined, you'll need to cut the outer stalks from time to time and trim excessively tall and dead stalks.

Instructions

    • 1

Break off new shoots when they first appear to control the spread of bamboo. Use sharp garden clippers if the shoots are large and don't yield to snapping off with your fingers.

    • 2

Trim the tops of tall bamboo to prevent it from interfering with overhead power lines. Cut each stalk just above a node, the horizontal ridge between sections. Use a power saw for very large stalks or a hacksaw for smaller stalks.

    • 3

Trim dead or unattractive stalks by cutting them at their base or as close to the base as you can reach. Use your hacksaw or a power saw for large stalks.
