How to Build a Fence for a Vine

If you enjoy the appearance of climbing vines and want to create the look on your own property, it is crucial that you have a fence of some sort for the vine to climb. Though many types of climbing vines are fully capable of making do with whatever type of fence or structure you have on hand, you may have a more pleasing final product if you build a fence for your vine.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the type of vine you plan to plant to find out what will create the ideal growing and climbing conditions for it, as well as how quickly the vine will grow. Kudzu is a type of vine that can grow more than a foot a day in ideal conditions, often overwhelming structures in its path. Make sure that your vine is well-adapted for your area and is something that you will be able to maintain in the long term.

Select the type of fencing materials that will suit your vine and your landscaping plans. Vines grow best on fencing that has openings that they can be woven through, making latticework, chain-link fences and wire fences good choices for vines.

    • 3

Install your fence posts by using a posthole digger to dig the hole the recommended depth into the ground and then inserting the fence post. How deep you need to plant your fence posts will depend on the type of fencing and the type of soil you have.

Put up your fence panels by nailing or inserting them between your posts as directed for the specific type of fence you are building.

    • 5

Plant your vines along the base of your fence line, following specific growing instructions for the type of vine you want to plant (i.e., what season to plant, temperatures, how much water, how much sunlight, etc.). Care for your vine as it begins to grow.

As the vine grows in length, train it to weave throughout your fence by manually wrapping the tendrils through your fence and continuing to guide the vine through the fence as it matures. Prune as necessary.
