Recycled Hanging Plant Pots

Instead of trashing plastic bottles and old cookware, recycle the items into hanging pot plants. Hang pot plants outside on your porch or from trees to give some added decoration and color to your landscape. All you need are a few ideas, some creativity and recyclable items from home to create hanging pot plants your friends and family will love.
  1. Plastic

    • Recycle plastic items like soda bottles or butter tubs to turn into hanging planters. For an easy butter tub planter, simply poke a couple of holes in the bottom of the tub to create a drain for water. Poke two holes on the rim of the tub, on opposite sides. Attach twine into the holes to hang the tub up. Paint the tub for added decoration. Fill with soil and your choice of flowers. Make a soda bottle planter by cutting the bottom 2 or 3 inches off the bottle. Poke a hole on opposite sides of the bottle at the bottom to attach string for hanging. Fill the inside of the bottle with soil and your choice of flowers and hang up. The lid of the bottle should be facing the ground. Poke a few small holes in the bottle to allow water to drain.

    Cans

    • Use old cans, such as coffee cans and metal cans, as hanging plant pots. Drill a hole on opposite sides of the rim of the can to attach wire to hang the can up. Drill two small holes in the bottom of the can to use as a water drain. Fill the can with potting soil and your choice of flowers, vines or herbs. Do the same with any types of metal cans or buckets. Find inexpensive metal cans at garage sales and thrift stores to use as planters.

    Old Cookware

    • Instead of trashing old cookware like pots and pans, use them to create hanging planters. Remove any handles from the cookware and drill a hole on opposite sides of the pot or pan. Drill a couple of drain holes on the bottom of the pot or pan, as well. For added decoration, use acrylic paints, stencils and paint pens to decorate the pots before hanging them up. Some ideas include painting strawberries on the side of the hanging planter pot and planting a strawberry plant in the pot. Plant herbs in the pot and paint pictures of different herbs on the side of the pot.

    Clothing

    • Old clothing works well for hanging planters. Take an old T-shirt and knot each corner of the shirt to create a bucket shape. Fill the shirt with potting soil and your favorite plant. Hang the shirt using twine on your porch or from a tree. You do not need drainage holes in clothing, as the fabric is not watertight. Make funny planters using bras or underwear. Sew the underwear leg holes together before filling with soil and flowers. For a bra, fill the cups with soil and a plant.
