How to Make Phalaenopsis Bark Mix

Phalaenopsis, commonly called moth orchids, are considered one of the easiest of the species to grow. These orchids have a long lasting bloom that can last from 80 to 120 days. Phalaenopsis is a genus of 50 species that thrive in the conditions found in the average home. The orchids need bright, indirect light and extra humidity. They should be planted in a moisture-retaining medium, but not dirt as that carries too many fungi and bacteria for high-humidity plants. The medium must also be fast draining, so the orchid roots don't sit in soggy conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a fir bark that can be easily found in garden centers. It won't hold water, but will add texture for the orchid's roots to cling to.

    • 2

Mix in two parts sphagnum peat moss with two parts fir bark. The moss holds moisture and enhances the acidity of the mix.

    • 3

Add one part perlite for drainage. Place the mix in an orchid pot with good drainage holes. Place the pot on a saucer with a layer of gravel and 1/2 inch of water to enhance the humidity without drowning the roots.

Make any combination of the first three ingredients or you can use them alone as a medium for your Phalaenopsis orchid, according to Aggie Horticulture. Harder-to-find items, such as fern tree fiber and charcoa,l may also be added. The tree fiber holds moisture and the charcoal adds acidity.
