How to Grow Miniature Orchids Indoors

Miniature orchids make lovely gifts for someone wanting a little splash of color in their home. These orchids are a smaller than the standard-sized orchid. Orchid varieties, such as cattleyas, cymbidiums and dendrobiums, come in miniature sizes. Miniature orchids grow in size from 6 to 24 inches tall, depending upon the cultivar. Growing and caring for them indoors does not differ much from standard-sized orchids, except for temperature conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the miniature orchid in a location in your home receiving full sunlight. A room with a south-facing window is best and adequate temperature levels to promote the orchid to bloom. The temperature in the room should be 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day dropping 10 degrees at night. Miniatures tolerate temperatures 5 to 10 degrees higher.

Monitor the leaves' color for proper light levels. Dark-green leaves indicate not enough light, while medium green indicates adequate light. Keep the windows and leaves dusted allowing adequate light transmission. Rotate the orchid once a week for an even light transmission if it is by the window.

    • 3

Water miniature orchids with lukewarm water in the sink, letting the water run freely through the drainage holes. Orchids prefer their soil dry completely between watering. Monitor the soil regularly and water when the soil is dry.

    • 4

Feed the miniature orchid once a week with a houseplant fertilizer diluted 1/4 the recommended amount on the label. You can also feed with an already diluted orchid fertilizer once a week. Follow the instructions on the label for proper usage. Avoid feeding the orchid during its dormant period.

Provide a humid environment for the orchid. Orchids need 50 to 70 percent humidity according to the University of Tennessee Extension. Increase humidity by placing a humidifier in the room or setting the orchid on a tray of gravel with water at the bottom of the tray. Make sure the flowerpot's bottom never touches the water.
