How to Repot a Dendrobium King

The Dendrobium King orchid is a hybrid of Dendrobium Ekapol and Polar Queen. It produces a pretty flower with white in the center and lilac at the tips of the petals. As a member of the largest flowering plant family, this orchid needs a warm, humid climate and bright, indirect light. Most orchids grow in rocks or bark and do not thrive in potting soil and the Dendrobium King is no exception. Orchid experts recommend repotting Dendrobiums once every year for the healthiest plants and most prolific blooms.

Instructions

    • 1

Repot your Dendrobium King in spring every year, at the beginning of its active growing season. Begin by removing your plant from its pot, shaking off all growing material and then rinsing the roots under tepid running water. Discard all of the old potting medium.

    • 2

Clip off all dead roots and those that are not light colored and fleshy. Be sure to cut these roots back to healthy tissue. Discard old roots.

    • 3

Cut your unpotted Dendrobium into two or more pieces to make additional plants if it has grown large and is rootbound. If it is small, skip this step.

    • 4

Place about 1 inch of fresh orchid bark into the bottom of a clean pot that has at least one drainage hole.

    • 5

Set your Dendrobium King orchid, or one of the pieces you separated, into the pot. Fill the pot almost to the top with fresh bark.

    • 6

Keep your Dendrobium King orchid in a warm, humid environment that receives bright indirect light. Allow the bark growing medium to dry slightly between waterings.
