How to Get a Paphiopedilum to Bloom

Help your paphiopedilum, a type of long-lasting orchid, bloom by through proper care. While some orchid species grow by clinging to the branches of tropical trees, paphiopedilum works as a houseplant in that it grows in well-draining potting soil. Depending on the species paphiopedilum may bloom only once a year while others bloom seasonally or any time throughout the year after mature growth. Patience is often required while waiting for the orchid to mature a growth, though careful flower maintenance is also required to ensure blooming.

Set paphiopedilum either under fluorescent lighting or in a sunny window. If using fluorescent lighting, place the flowers about 8 inches away from the lights, and keep the lights on the orchids for about 12 to 14 hours per day. If utilizing a sunny window, keep in mind that while orchids require a good amount of light, they are very sensitive to heat. Reduce the intensity of summer heat if keeping the orchid in a south or west-facing window by using a sheer curtain to protect the plant. Move the flower to an east-facing window when temperatures get above 90 degrees. Paphilopedilum is unlikely to bloom in a north-facing window, and if light levels are too high or too low. Low light levels are indicated by the presence of dark green foliage, while high light levels are indicated by leaves that look bleached or pale yellow.

Water the paphiopedilum based on the factors such as temperature, humidity level and light exposure. These factors all affect how quickly the potting soil will dry. The soil should never be allowed to fully dry in between waterings. Avoid softened water if possible when watering your paphipedilum, and use room temperature or almost-lukewarm water so as not to "shock" the plant.

Fertilize the plant with an orchid-specific fertilizer that is low in urea. Apply the fertilizer at 1/4 to 1/2 the label strength every other time you water your orchid during growth spurts in warm months, and once a month during cooler weather. Fertilize your paphiopedilum every three months with a complete fertilizer that contains nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.
