How to Replant Orchids With Stones

Orchids typically need very well-draining growing medium, so soil is not always the appropriate option. Stones and stone-like materials like lava rock, perlite and charcoal allow for airflow and drainage.

Things You'll Need

  • Orchid pot
  • Orchid
  • Gardening knife
  • Stones, clay pieces or glass pieces
  • Growing media or stones
  • Stake
  • Twine or cotton strips

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a new pot for your orchid if it has rotting roots or its roots are healthy and filling up the current one. Choose a planter slightly larger than the current one for healthy roots and a slightly smaller planter for rotting roots.

    • 2

Water the orchid before repotting it to loosen its roots.

    • 3

Remove the orchid from its planter carefully, freeing stuck roots with a small gardening knife.

    • 4

Cut off dead or dying roots carefully with the knife.

    • 5

Place large pieces of broken clay pot, mosaic pieces or stones in the bottom of the new planter.

    • 6

Center the orchid in the middle of the planter. Slowly pour your chosen stones around the plant. Even out the stones so they sit relatively level around the plant.

    • 7

Place a stake in the planter, and carefully tie the orchid stalk to it with twine or tiny cotton strips.
