Choose the correct form of potting. In their natural habitat, blue orchids grow along tree bark with their aerial roots hanging freely. You can grow them in baskets or along a large piece of cork bark with the roots hanging down in order for them to absorb any moisture that is in the air. The key with blue orchid growing is to allow the roots to grow without restraint.
Select the proper medium for growing blue orchids. These unique plants do not grow in every day potting soil; they prefer a combined medium such as pine bark, osmunda fiber and fir bark. Your local garden center should sell a pre-made orchid mix which will be pH balanced with a suitable texture for growing blue orchids. This might be a good choice if you are new to growing blue orchids.
Give your blue orchid an appropriate amount of light. Orchids flourish in sunlight and prefer extreme light, so try to locate them in an area where they will get the maximum amount. In a greenhouse, suspend them from the roof, close to the glass. In your home, pick the window with the brightest light as possible for your blue orchids to grow.
Feed them. Every two weeks from June to mid October, you should give your blue orchids an application of a good plant food that is high in potash at half strength. Then again, during the months from November until June, feed at only quarter strength just once a month. Your blue orchids will not only grow, but will thrive on this type of plant food.
Give your blue orchids plenty of water. It is almost the most important thing that you can do to assure flowering of the blue orchids. During the growing season from June to September, water the orchids every day. Simply keeping them moist for the remainder months will be sufficient to grow the blue orchids. After they bloom, give them a two week rest period to allow them to dry and then water them again, being careful not to overdo it.
Re-pot the beautiful blue orchids with care. When you have grown your orchids and they are flowering, they will need to be re-potted every year or two in order for them to continue producing flowers.
