Oncidium orchids naturally grow throughout the tropics of the Western Hemisphere, along the Caribbean Sea. Because they look like miniature Latin American dancers, these orchids are referred to as “Dancing Lady” orchids.
Oncidium orchids require a day temperature of between 78 and 85 degrees F. Night temperatures should be 60 to 65 degrees F. The orchids should live in 40 to 50 percent humidity.
Oncidium orchids prefer filtered, bright light. Leaves turning red indicate that the plant is receiving too much light. Too little light turns the leaves a dark green.
The soil of the Oncidium orchid needs to become moderately dry between waterings, which is usually five to seven days. More water is necessary when a new shoot appears.
Once every two years the owner of an oncidium orchid should repot the plant. The appearance of roots tell owners to repot, as does a new shoot that is 2 to 3 inches tall.
