Potting Soil for Orchids

In their natural habitats, orchids are epiphytes that survive by attaching themselves to trees. They absorb water from those trees -- not from regular soil, like most other plants. When grown in pots, orchids require a similar setting.
  1. Types

    • In a pot, orchids grow well in chopped fir tree bark, tree fern fiber, volcanic rock, perlite or charcoal.

    Drainage

    • Orchids require plenty of soil drainage. While plants that grow in regular soil can usually survive wet conditions on occasion, orchids are used to water dripping off the trees. As a result, they cannot survive soggy soil.

    Warning

    • Orchids can't thrive in regular soil, and even a growing medium that includes soil is not as good for them as soilless conditions. Orchids also need fertilizer while they're growing.
