How to Care for Encyclia Orchids

Encyclia orchids are also called butterfly orchids. Although they grow in the wild in several areas of the world, including Mexico and South America, these orchids require a moderate amount of attention when grown indoors. The flowers of the encyclia orchid can be a variety of colors, including orange, yellow, green and pink. Encyclia orchids are sensitive to cold weather and frost, and grow best indoors where the temperature can be controlled.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the orchid in a planter filled with potting medium designed specifically for orchids. Encyclia orchids grow well in loose growth mediums, such as coconut husks.

    • 2

Place the orchid where it will receive partial sunlight throughout the day. Encyclia orchids are susceptible to scorch if exposed to direct sunlight or too much heat.

    • 3

Vary the temperature of the area where the orchid is growing. In order to bloom, encyclia orchids need a temperature drop of 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit at night. One way to change the temperature is to use a grow light; turn off the grow light at night to keep the area around the orchid cooler.

    • 4

Mist the orchid with a spray bottle each day to increase the humidity of the growing area of the plant. Encyclia orchids need regular watering in order to grow. Spray the base of the plant to avoid the growth of mold or mildew on the leaves.

    • 5

Water the plant on a weekly basis. The growth medium of the orchid should be kept damp at all times to ensure the orchid stays healthy.

    • 6

Fertilize the orchid once a week so that it is fed properly. Reduce feedings to once a month during the winter period, when the plant is dormant. Add a small amount of a 20-20-20 fertilizer to the growing medium of the plant and make sure the fertilizer is mixed into the growth medium so that it will reach the roots.
