Cymbidium orchids have long been a favorite, both for home orchid hobbyists and for use in floral arrangements, because of the long stem filled with colorful, long-lasting blooms. New cymbidium hybrids are constantly being developed to include plants that are more favorable to growing conditions in everyday home environments. Hybrids have also been introduced that will bloom magnificent red-colored flowers. Examples of these varieties are Royal Red "Princess Nobuko," Festive Red, Red Beauty "Evening Star," After Hours "Dr. No," Dream Girl "Royal Red" and Featherhill "Late Red."
Most often seen in floral arrangement because of their sturdy stems and distinctive colors, dendrobium orchids, like cymbidium orchids, have a vast number of hybrids, many of which produce red-toned flowers. On close inspection, you many decide the dendrobium is really a very deep pink or purple, but the blossom is classified as red. Several dendrobium varieties bloom a truer red if grown in lower light. Hybrid dendrobium orchids that bloom red include Petite Syrah, Vanda Mokara "Ravishing Indian Red," Velvet Melody and Bon Red.
Oncidium orchids are commonly found growing as houseplants because they are easy to care for and feature long-lasting, fragrant flowers. Oncidium orchids are usually thought to have yellow flowers, but new hybrids have introduced many more colors for this popular orchid plant, including red. Twinkle "Red Fantasy" has an abundance of vanilla-smelling flowers, Tolumnia Red Berry's petals are a deep red fading to pink, while Sharry Baby "Red" has small, delicate flowers with a chocolate fragrance.
