How to Propagate Zoanthids

The name Zoanthid refers to a group of different species of brightly colored, colonial animals that make up coral colonies. These beautiful animals are easy to care for and fairly simple to propagate, which makes them ideal for beginning reef enthusiasts. While beautiful, these animals produce one of the deadliest neurotoxins known to man. Even a small quantity that enters the blood stream could prove fatal. Take extreme care when handling these creatures.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the protective gloves. Dry off the rock you plan to use as the base of the new colony with the paper towels.

    • 2

Lift up the main part of the colony. Locate the thinnest piece of connecting material between the bulk of the colony and the section you wish to separate for propagation and cut it with the razor blade.

    • 3

Peel the separated section of the colony from the rock.

    • 4

Squeeze the super glue onto the rock where the colony will be placed. Dry off the bottom of the zoanthid cutting with the paper towels. Glue the cutting to the rock, allowing the glue to set for at least 20 seconds before proceeding.

    • 5

Rinse off any excretions produced by the zoanthids in the container of clean saltwater. Place the new colony back into the main tank with plenty of exposure to the light and water flow. The new colony should begin to flourish after a few hours.
