How to Water an Orchid With Ice Cubes

Orchids are known for being difficult to maintain, but they don't need to be difficult to water. Watering houseplants confuses many people, and this confusion can be fatal to the plant if its water needs are not met. This need not be the case with orchids. With a few ice cubes now and then, orchids can be watered without the worry of overwatering or underwatering.

Place the ice cubes on top of the soil near the edge of the pot. Use one ice cube for pots that are 4 inches wide or smaller. Use two ice cubes for pots that are more than 4 inches wide. As the ice melts it will water the orchid.

Check soil moisture approximately eight hours later by pushing a finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. If your finger touches moist soil, the soil has enough water.
