Do Black Orchids Exist?

Several different species of orchids known as black orchids throughout the world. The name is often deceptive, as these flowers only rarely contain black features. There are a number of flowers belonging to the Bulbophyllum genus locally referred to as black orchids.
  1. Coelogyne pandurata

    • This species of black orchid is native to Borneo. Hybridizers and orchid fans pursue it for its authentic black lip.

    Liparis nervosa

    • The Liparis nervosa species typically grows in grasslands and woodlands throughout Africa, the United States and Asia.

    Prosthechea cochleata

    • Famously known as the national flower of Belize, this species of black orchid can be found throughout Central America, the West Indies, Venezuela, Colombia and the United States in the state of Florida.

    Masdevallia rolfeana

    • This black orchid flower is only known to exist in Costa Rica. It belongs to the Orchidaceae family.
