Easter Orchid Care

Light Requirements

• The Easter orchid blooms when it reaches four to seven years of age. It will successfully flower year after year if its care requirements are met. Provide the Easter orchid with ample light during the late fall and early winter. In the late winter and spring the plant will tolerate light shade. During the late spring, summer and early fall the plant enjoys shady conditions. Provide shading by placing a light, sheer curtain on the window to protect the orchid from the sunlight. Plants grown in windowsills benefit from light afternoon shading. Excessive light can cause the Easter orchid's foliage to turn yellow or black.

Temperature

• During the winter months the Easter orchid enjoys a daytime temperature between 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and a nighttime temperature down to 55 degrees F. During the summer the plant prefers a warmer daytime temperature range of 65 to 75 degrees F. When the temperature tops 90 degrees F. the plant may suffer some foliage die-back on young leaves.

Humidity

• The ideal humidity for the Easter orchid is 40 to 70 percent. To maintain humidity around the orchid consider placing the plant in a humidity tray which is pan with moist pebbles. A humidifier with a humidistat can also successfully maintain the humidity level in the home. Good air circulation will help keep the plant healthy.

Watering

• Water the Easter orchid when the potting medium feels dry to the touch. Consider setting the plant in a sink and allowing the water to flow freely onto the potting medium and out the holes in the bottom of the pot to successfully water the orchid. Take care not to wash away the potting medium. During its active growth the Easter orchid benefits from fertilizer applications. Choose a good, general-purpose orchid food and follow the directions on the label.
