How to Set Up Hydroponic Orchids

Orchids are elegant, specialized flowers that grow in a wealth of colors and sizes, but always need the same basic care. The plants do best in dry, airy foundations, and should always grow in a non-soil planting media. Although hydroponic gardens feature indoor situations and non-soil growing foundations, and would seem to be ideal for orchids, hydroponics depends on consistent water circulation, which goes against an orchid's needs. Grow orchids in hydroponics only with specific considerations, to keep the plants healthy and blooming.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your growing pods half-full of non-soil growing foundation like peat moss, fern matter, orchid potting mix or wood chips. Lay the orchid bulbs and roots across this layer and then cover them with more of the media to fill the pods. Press the media down firmly to secure the orchids, then add a stake and clip to steady the orchid flower spikes.

Put the hydroponic garden in a spot where the orchids will receive indirect natural light or full artificial light for eight hours a day. Orchids will burn in bright, direct light but do well in north- or south-facing windows and under artificial lights.

Set the system to water the orchids with only 1 inch of water, at a frequency of every 10 days. These plants need dry conditions, and will fail if the system waters too much or too often.
